Abstract
Benoit Frydman traces the intellectual formation and historical context of Paul Otlet (1868-1944), a polymath scholar from Brussels who developed his legal thought within the framework of the Belgian 'sociological turn' at the end of the 19th century. This period was marked by the conflict between the neo-Thomist reaction at Louvain and the emergence of positivist and progressive thought at the Université libre de Bruxelles. Trained within the 'École de Bruxelles' by innovative jurists such as Guillaume De Greef, who conceived of law as a product of society and an instrument for its reform, Otlet embodies a first generation of Belgian intellectuals convinced that positive science could solve social problems and contribute to progress. It is in this intellectual context of interdisciplinarity and social engagement that Otlet undertook a decisive collaboration with Henri La Fontaine in 1892 and founded the Office bibliographique in 1893, the first milestone in his vast project to catalog and organize legal and social knowledge on a global scale.
