Abstract
This collection introduces the singular hermeneutic method of Leo Strauss, based on a meticulous and rigorous reading of philosophical texts combined with the recognition of an oblique and veiled "art of writing" that governs philosophical production in contexts of persecution and censorship. The authors emphasize that Strauss reconstructs within the tradition the vital questions concerning the political and theologico-political conditions of possibility for philosophy itself, notably the tension between persecution and freedom of expression, between historical truth and philosophical teaching, and between ancient and modern philosophy. The volume, resulting from an international symposium held at the Sorbonne in December 1998, offers a careful reading of the figure who undoubtedly remains the most difficult, disconcerting, and influential commentator in the history of political philosophy.

Ce recueil introduit la méthode herméneutique singulière de Leo Strauss, fondée sur une lecture minutieuse et rigoureuse des textes philosophiques combinée à la reconnaissance d'un « art d'écrire » oblique et voilé qui gouvernerait la production philosophique dans les contextes de persécution et de censure. Les auteurs soulignent que Strauss reconstitue dans la tradition les questions vitales concernant les conditions politiques et théologico-politiques de possibilité de la philosophie elle-même, notamment la tension entre persécution et liberté d'expression, entre vérité historique et enseignement philosophique, et entre la philosophie ancienne et la philosophie moderne. Le volume, résultant d'un colloque international tenu à la Sorbonne en décembre 1998, offre une lecture attentive de celui qui demeure sans doute le commentateur le plus difficile, le plus déconcertant et le plus influent de l'histoire de la philosophie politique.
