Abstract
In this interview, Benoit Frydman welcomes the unanimous, clear, and firm decision of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom invalidating the unlawful suspension of the British Parliament ordered by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, characterizing it as a courageous defense of the rule of law and democratic institutions. He identifies a worrying populist trend sweeping across Europe and the world, wherein political leaders—notably Donald Trump, Matteo Salvini, as well as certain Polish and Hungarian rulers—claim to embody the will of the people in order to better bypass parliamentary and judicial oversight, thereby undermining the very foundations of constitutional democracy.
