Abstract
Benoit Frydman defines contemporary civil society as an autonomous 'third sector' situated between the State and the market, one that plays a role essential to modern democracy through its function of criticism and mobilisation of public opinion. He analyses the structural tension between the participatory engagement of non-governmental organisations at the international level and the need to maintain a critical distance, arguing for the democratisation of international organisations rather than for a mere institutionalisation of organised civil society.

Benoît Frydman définit la société civile contemporaine comme un « tiers secteur » autonome situé entre l'État et le marché, jouant un rôle essentiel à la démocratie moderne par sa fonction de critique et de mobilisation de l'opinion publique. Il analyse la tension structurelle entre l'engagement participatif des organisations non gouvernementales aux niveaux internationaux et la nécessité de maintenir une distance critique, plaidant pour la démocratisation des organisations internationales plutôt que pour une simple institutionnalisation de la société civile organisée.
